As previously stated in Part 1, the desire and push towards unity is repeatedly repelled by the prideful result of division.  The push towards world peace seems always trampled under by war.  So before us lay two contradictory ideas: “Unity” and “Division”; “Peace” and “War”.  I also suggested that peace has already been obtained, yet to many it is not known.  Why?  For one simple reason.  Many have chosen to leave God out of their unity equation.  Now when I say God, I’m not talking about all gods, rather the God of gods, the Only True and Living God.  There are many gods worshipped by mankind, however, there is only one true Creator and Savior of men. This is the God who reveals Himself in the Bible. The Lord God spoke to the prophet Isaiah saying, “Assemble yourselves and come; draw near together, you that are escaped of the nations: they have no knowledge that set up the wood of their graven image, and pray unto a god that cannot save.  Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the LORD? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside Me.”  Isaiah 45:20-21  There is one simple way to discern the true God from all others- Prophecy.  The Lord God of the Bible claims to be the only just God and Savior of mankind.  He not only claims to be the One True God, He then backs up His claims by giving us hundreds of prophetic statements which can be checked out historically and archaeologically. And in each case, God’s Word has been confirmed by the evidence.  (For more on prophecy as proof go to: The Value of Prophecy, T.A. McMahon, The Berean Call.)

The world would be content to add the True God to its billions of false ones because they know that turning God into one of the gods strips Him of His true role as the King above all.  To go to a kingdom where everyone is king really means there is no king.  To have the title King ultimately means that one, and only one must have rule and authority over all others in his kingdom, and so it is with the Lord God.  He is the rightful King above all kings.  Now here lies the rub.  This is ultimately why we cannot attain lasting peace; longterm unity on this planet.  This is why the lofty and noble goal of unity has remained so illusive.  We foolishly assume that our enemy in one another, when in fact our true enemy in the King of kings.  Our enemy is the True and Living God, the One who created this universe and has set up both the physical and moral laws by which both matter and man are to be governed by.  Again the Lord spoke to the prophet Jeremiah saying, “Thus shall you say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens. He hath made the earth by His power, He hath established the world by His wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by His discretion.” Jeremiah 10:11-12  Ironically, matter does a much better job of obeying the Creator than man.

Even though we see ourselves battling with one another and many have lost their lives in wars, robberies, bombings, etc., it is not men that we’re really fighting against.  Ultimately our struggle is with God, Himself.  We constantly struggle with the deep desire to be our own kings.  Deep down no one really wants to be told what to do.  We are all rebels, attempting to hide from the One True God, the One who created this universe and mankind.  Consider the following statements found in the Bible and see whether you can honestly disagree.  King David of Israel said after sinning with Bathsheba, “Again You [God], and You alone have I sinned.”  Psalm 51:4  Again in the book of John, Jesus says, “And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.”  John 3:19   In the book of Jeremiah the Lord says, “The heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked, who can know it?”  Jeremiah 17:9   And in the New Testament book of Colossians it says, “And you, that were sometime alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works.”  Colossians 1:21  Finally, in the book of James, we read, “You adulterers and adulteresses, know you not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.” James 4:4

Even if we were somehow able to make last peace on this planet, it would do us no eternal good.  Somehow, man foolishly believes that if we can just get enough people to agree, we can somehow break the bands of the Creator’s judgments.  If we can just get enough people to pretend the Lord God doesn’t exist, somehow we will be able to free ourselves from the guilt of our rebellion against Him.  Whether through signing paper or shaking the hand of one who may hold a knife in his other; whether through the threat of war or promise of prosperity, mankind continues to pursue this strange and foolish notion of making peace without God.  It will never work.  Why?  Because I am a man, and I know what is in man.  We are all selfish, arrogant, prideful creatures at the core.  We are self-centered at best and condemned rebels at worst.  There is no hope of ever making unity apart from God.  Ultimately someone will always want to rise to the top, lording his power over others.  This is the way of man.

We cannot create unity, but we can enter into the unity already created.   Who has made this unity for man, you might wonder?  You might reason, and rightly so, “If man is already condemned, serving his sentence, then man surely cannot exit his ‘jail cell’ to solve the emnity between God and all of manking.”  So then who has broken down this separating wall between God and man?  The answer is clear.  There is only one who has done such a marvelous, selfless and loving work.

See Part 3 for my conclusion.
